First Quarter 2004

Dear Jane and John,

2004 is starting out as a pretty good year.  March 30th marks the sixth quarter in which your account has beaten the market.  In fact once again you have outperformed the market and the expected return for your account by several hundred percent.  In order to illustrate this we have created a dynamic index especially for your account.  This blended index reflects the expected return of your account’s exact asset allocation.  We have included this index on your report with the hope this will make the results of our investment approach more relevant to you.  In this era of sensitivity to risk we want to emphasize it is possible to obtain superior results while sticking with a conservative style.

Looking forward we are expecting a stronger market in the second quarter.  If earnings are up as much as we believe they will be, we think investment sentiment will be revitalized.  This should translate into higher prices for stocks both large and small.  So, although we were not aggressive in the first quarter, we have become more fully invested heading into the coming earnings announcements.  The recent purchase of “Diamonds” completed this move to this more fully invested posture.  As always we will make necessary changes to your portfolio as the market unfolds.

We have been striving to develop better systems with which to test our investment theories and to manage your money.  The creation of the blended benchmark for your portfolio was a benefit of this effort.  We feel confident that these systems will allow us to expand our practice without sacrificing quality of service.  You may or may not know that we currently grow our business solely by referral.  If you know of anyone you think would benefit from our services please let us know.  We would appreciate the opportunity to help your friends.

As always thank you for your continuing patronage and welcome your questions and comments.
